The small and bright Sumerian Specialty Coffee has been serving great coffee since 2012 and is hugely popular amongst the expat crowd. The small space decked out in wood therefore gets easily packed (and noisy). My favorite spot is one of the window seats overlooking Shaanxi road. Sumerian is a dog-friendly place and has its own house dogs, which are often around.
Sumerian Specialty Coffee is a roaster and is supplying several other venues across Shanghai with their quality coffee. They are also selling beans in 200g bags in the store. Several single origins are available as pour over or cold brew, starting from 36 rmb. The selection also includes beans from Chinese Yunnan province.
In case you feel hungry, the bagels are an excellent choice as the folks behind Sumerian also operate another venue, boom boom bagels on Anfu road. My personal favorite is the sailor legs bagel (60 rmb) made of smoked salmon, red onions, green olives, cream cheese and ricotta with a choice of bagel (plain, sea salt, sesame, parmesan or ‘everything’). In addition to bagels, they offer different cakes and cookies.
