Lujiazui, the financial district on the Pudong side with its impressive skyline just opposite to the bund is now a symbol of Shanghai’s financial power. It is hard to imagine that the whole area was mainly farmlands until a few decades ago. Only the opening of economic zone in the early nineties started a huge transformation process. the most famous highrise buildings include Shanghai tower (the second highest building in the world), the Shanghai world financial center, jinmao tower and the oriental pearl tv tower.

The tallest buildings all have observation platforms open for visitors. Be sure to pick a day with good view, though. Recommended times are early mornings when queues are short or late afternoons as you will be able to enjoy the view by day and night.

I recommend to skip the – in my opinion – hugely popular and highly overrated oriental pearl tv tower and instead opt for one of the three highrise towers. Tthe newst one, Shanghai tower as the tallest one would be my top choice now. The shanghai world financial center with its skywalk remains also still interesting, though. And if you do not feel like spending a bunch of money on observatory deck tickets, you can alternatively head up to jinmao tower’s grand hyatt cafe on the 54th floor or the cloud 9 bar (weekdays from 5pm, weekends 2pm on) on the 87th floor for drinks with a view.

The 128-story shanghai tower is with 632 meters the tallest building in Shanghai, and the 2nd tallest in the world. The world’s fastest elevators beam you up to the observation deck in less than a minute. The observation deck is currently open up to the 118th floor and (on weekends) 119th floor. A few more floors are yet to open, you will then be able to enjoy the view from the tallest observation platform in the world.

Do not forget to bring your passport, which may be required to purchase tickets.

The 492m tall ’bottle opener’ surpassed the Jinmao tower as Shanghai’s highest building in 2007. Highlight is the transparent skywalk on the 100th floor observation deck.

The 88-story, 421-meter-tall jinmao tower completed in 1999 was shanghai’s first major highrise and until 2007 the highest building.

The observation deck is on the 88th floor. newly opened in 2016 is an outdoor glass-bottomed fenceless skywalk, which allows 15 visitors at the same time, having to wear safety gear. Tickets are 388 rmb for 20 min with different time slots available. Mobile phones or cameras have to be left inside – so no selfies here…
