Xintiandi is an upscale entertainment and shopping complex, consisting of rebuilt houses in traditional shikumen style in the north block turned into cafes, restaurants, bars and shops. in the south section there is a modern shopping mall.
The area is hugely popular with chinese and overseas visitors. numerous western and asian upscale quality eateries as well as bars and coffee shops – many with outdoor seating – make this area a great place for people watching, strolling and dining. most shops and restaurants mainly are catering to tourists, therefore prices are on the high side.
While the neighborhood probably is not the most authentic chinese experience you will find in shanghai, it still provides an enjoyable afternoon or evening. Try the excellent xiaolongbao dumplings at Dintaifung restaurant if you have the chance.
As an alternative, also consider visiting Tianzifang, another shikumen redevelopment area further to the southwest, with a more residential feel.
Xintiandi is also home to the following small museums:
Shikumen wulixiang museum
20 rmb, seniors + children 10 rmb
Small museum depicting life in traditional shikumen stone-framed houses allowing a glimpse into old shanghai, worth a quick walkthrough.
Memorial site of first chinese communist party national congress
